I love Masterpiece's Pride and Prejudice, plus the 2005. I love 1995 Sense and Sensibility. I love 1999 Mansfield Park. 1995 and 2007 Persuasion. 2020 and both 1996 versions (for different reasons) of Emma. 2007 Northanger Abbey.
I'll take Pride and Prejudice any day as my first love, with Persuasion a close second.
I happen to agree with you about Mansfield Park. I enjoyed Francis O’Connor’s performance very much and think she gave us a less dull Fanny without straying far from the book. I could have done without the bang on the head references to slavery especially how it was expressed so sexually. Was it really necessary to go that far when Jane did or could not? Overall, I enjoyed this adaptation very much. Try the Emma miniseries with Romola Garai, it is excellent.
The 1995 Persuasion is my favourite Austen adaptation,as it's restraint eloquently captures the tone of the novel. I also enjoyed the Anna Taylor-Joy adaptation, particularly for Mr Knightley's performance, and the Kate Beckinsale one for your reasons, and because of how it fleshed out Jane Fairfax, not a minor character but who is often treated as one.
I also liked the 1999 version of Mansfield Park. I didn't appreciate the novel until I saw the movie and could picture that version of Fanny Price as I read the book. Prior to the movie, I just couldn't relate to Fanny. She was too perfect and didn't have enough spirit.
I agree, there was a lot of poetic license, but I don't expect dramatisations for television to be accurate, the real stories are well documented. I enjoyed it, it was wonderful to see more of Jane's and Cassandra's life than ever before on screen. Have you seen the exhibition of Cassandra's art on Jane Austen's House website? She was very talented.
Emma 2020 and Persuasion 1995 both make my heart soar in different but beautiful ways <3 have you had the chance to see the 2006 Pride and Prejudice rereleased in cinemas this month? If you have the chance, please go before the run finishes! I went on a solo date to see it at the Prince Charles cinema last week in Soho and had a lovely time experiencing it with other Jane Austen (and hand-flex) lovers
I love the 1995 Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle and 2009 Emma with Ramola Garai amd Jonny Lee Miller. I also loved the series Sanditon that ran 3 seasons based on another unfinished work. Id be interested in your thoughts on the latest series Miss Austen.
I enjoyed Miss Austen. It's no a documentary, I don't expect it to be accurate. Patsy was the most convincing Jane Austen I've seen and it is wonderful to see so much of Jane and Cassandra's story told on screen. It was a bit strange to watch my family dramatised, people I have known all my life....some characters were spot on, others were not, but, as I say, i wasn't a documentary and the true stories are well documented.
I love and own several of those on DVD.
Which is your favourite?

I haven't seen the 2007 Persuasion. Thank you for the recommendation, I am going to watch it.
I hope you enjoy it. It's a bit different than the 1995 version.

I'd love to see Romola Garai's Emma but, at the moment, I can't work out how to access it in Australia. I am on the hunt!

Yes, the 1995 Persuasion in the most beautiful portrayal of Jane's writing (in addition to her stories and characters) that I have seen.
Emma is without hesitation my favorite film adaptation.
The colors speak for themselves. I feel, watching the film, like a rainbow.
Emma is also my favorite work!
I agree, Emma is a favourite of mine too!
I’m so glad you included that version of Persuasion - my favourite Austen adaptation.
Yes, it's so beautifully done, with restraint and subtlety that perfectly captures the essence of Jane's work.
So…. Let’s just not talk about Netflix’s Persuasion… yeah…. Let’s not… 🤦♀️
Agreed....let's not! 🫣

I’m curious what you think of the latest Austen series that focuses on her sister Cassie. It felt like a pure work of fiction but it was enjoyable.

Is that the 2005 P&P with Keira Knightley? Unfortunately, I am in Australia at the moment, if it's on in UK cinemas.
